Arsenal have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Real Madrid youngster Alvaro Morata on a loan deal in January,according to reports in Onda Cero.
The Spaniard has failed to make the starting line up on a regular basis at Madrid and is thereby willing to make the move to England so as to raise his chances to make the World Cup squad travelling to Brazil in 2014. The striker has made only one start in the La Liga this season, followed by nine appearances from the bench, scoring two goals in the process.
The report states that the 21 year old striker has apparently accepted an offer to join the North London club until the end of the season, no doubt feeling that his chances of securing first team football will be more easily achieved at the Emirates Stadium than at the Bernabeu.
Morata wants first team football but knows he faces a battle to get in to the starting line up with the likes of Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of him, but it seems Wenger has assured him that a loan spell at the Emirates will help him reach his target. He is considered one of the hottest prospects in Spanish football having netted 11 goals in 12 appearances for the Spanish Under 21 national team.
He stands at 6 ft 3 in, providing a physical presence, is good at holding up the ball, and also has good athleticism. He is also quick despite his height and has earned praise for the intelligence of his movement. The Spaniard is a lethal finisher with an instinct for scoring, something Arsenal require.
The Gunners are a little light in the striking department with Nicklas Bendtner being the only backup to Giroud, but he too is expected to leave in the next transfer window and Morata will be seen as a temporary stop gap before Wenger goes searching for more permanent options in the summer. With players often costing a premium in January, and with Wenger notably stingy with his transfer dealings, a loan deal could be the best option.
His pace and prolificacy in front of goal will put the pressure off the Frenchman who has been the main man up front thus far. But one worry is how long he would take to get up to speed with the Premier League. Really we require someone with Premiership experience to instantly have an impact.
